It may surprise you to hear that our monkey species, Grey Langurs and the Macaques, have developed survival behaviours with Spotted Deer!
The main predators for our monkeys and deer are leopards, pythons, crocodiles and for very young monkeys and deer some large eagle species can pose a threat.
Working as a team gives best protection from predators. Monkeys with their excellent eyesight and far reaching views from their position in the trees can spot predators early and with a series of whistles and barks they warn the troop. You will often find monkeys and herds of Spotted Deer in close proximity. The deer benefit from the warning sounds made by the monkey but with their superior sense of smell they play their part in the early warning system too! You can hear the whooping noises they make when they smell a predator. An additional benefit for the deer herd is that the monkeys will often drop fruit and fresh leaves which fall to the floor and the waiting deer, so they get an extra tasty lunch whilst staying safe.
Isn’t nature wonderful! Two very different animals living in harmony and working as a team to warn each other of predators.
Join us for a peaceful safari immersed in nature, respectfully watching these wonderful animals in their own wild habitat.
