The Sri Lankan Wild Buffalo!

On safari in Udawalawe National Park with Udawalawe Ethical Safari.

Wild buffaloes

In Sri Lanka wildlife the second biggest land animal is the wild buffalo. Some people call them “water buffalo” and there is a good reason to say that because during the daytime buffalos gather around the water for cooling down their body temperature. They don’t have velvet skin like deer, they have no hair, nothing to protect them from the sun, so it makes them hot.

These buffaloes are living hard lives because they have to protect each other and calf from the crocodiles and leopards. Generally, buffaloes are very aggressive and they would not think twice about chasing predators, they are unstoppable; their massive horns and strong body show us this.
